The lack of access to mental health care can make it difficult to get the care you need quickly. Depression is the most common mental health disorder in the United States, and severe clinical depression can affect every aspect of your life, from personal, to medical, to family, to career.

The most common treatments for depression are talk therapy and antidepressant medication. Talk therapy, also known as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), is the most common form of treatment for depression. SSRI’s, or Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs), are the most common class of medications used to treat depression. Some of these alternative treatments are accessible to everyone, while others require a medical professional. Please consult your psychiatrist for individualized medical care.

For Mild to Moderate Depression:

Meditation, yoga, acupuncture, guided imagery, chiropractic, hypnosis, biofeedback, aromatherapy and light therapy are some of the alternative remedies for depression that do not require medication. In addition, some may benefit from holistic remedies including diet and activity level changes.

Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing (EMDR) is a form of mental health therapy that focuses on treating conditions that are caused by memories of traumatic events in the past. EMDR is most well-known for its use in treating PTSD, but it is also being used to treat a variety of other conditions.

Hypnotherapy is a form of treatment widely used in the US. Hypnosis has been investigated by researchers as a potential treatment for a number of illnesses, including anxiety and depression. Helping a patient learn to better control their state of awareness is the aim of hypnotherapy. Hypnotherapy sessions for depression may center on assisting the patient in reaching a relaxed state. This way they can talk about their sentiments and emotions in this calm condition without becoming more stressed or anxious. Our Clinic offers this alternative treatment option with therapist Shelley Miller, LISW, C.Ht

Severe Treatment Options

However, these treatments may not be effective enough to fight severe depression, which is what is known as “Treatment-Resistant.”

This type of depression is more stubborn and does not respond to traditional psychotherapy or antidepressants. Additionally, more severe cases might find these options challenging as a result of their symptoms.

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation is known as TMS. TMS is a non-invasive, non-pharmaceutical alternative treatment for depression that imitates the brain regions implicated in the depressive cycle using magnetic pulses. For several weeks, it necessitates regular treatments and lacks the negative effects of antidepressant medications, such as weight gain and sexual side effects. Since 2008, TMS has been approved by the FDA and is obtainable at numerous specialty clinics like ours at A Child & Family Psychiatry.

Ketamine treatments are the source of esketamine, a dissociative anesthetic. It causes a brief, moderate dissociation when taken in tiny doses. Through a process known as neuroplasticity, it can treat depression when done a few times a week for one to two months. This is a method of reestablishing connections between brain cells.

Spravato operates in a distinct manner compared to traditional antidepressants. This innovative treatment involves the use of a nasal spray that individuals can self-administer, enabling the brain to enhance the transmission of messages more effectively. By stimulating specific receptors, one can effectively regulate their mood and alleviate the symptoms of depression. Notably, the impact on mood can be rapid, particularly for individuals experiencing Treatment-Resistant Depression. Esketamine, a derivative of ketamine, serves as the active ingredient in Spravato. Although chemically similar to ketamine, Spravato and esketamine exert different effects on the body. While ketamine functions as an anesthetic, esketamine acts upon specific neural receptors to enhance the brain’s plasticity.
